Rationale:
Wind Power is one of Ireland’s most abundant sources of renewable energy which makes it very important.  This module introduces the students to wind power and covers a broad range of scientific, engineering and business material most relevant to wind power.  Wind 1 is a 7 ECTS credit module of the M.Sc. in Renewable Energy Systems at Dundalk Institute of Technology.

   • Wind Characteristics, • Wind Resource Assessment, • Wind Turbine Technology Overview,
   • Wind Turbine Aerodynamics, • Wind Turbine Performance and Control,   
   • Electrical System Aspects, • Wind Turbine Design Issues, • Environmental Impacts,
   • Small Wind Systems

Entry Requirements:
Candidates must already hold a level 8 (Honours) Bachelor Degree in Engineering or Science.  The award must be at Honours 2.2 grade or above (GPA 2.5 or 50% avg.).  Science disciplines are restricted to Experimental Physics, Applied Physics, Physical Chemistry, Materials Science, Electronics and Building Services.

Opportunities for Further Study:
Wind 1 is one module of an existing Post Graduate Diploma / M.Sc. in Renewable Energy Systems.  Successful participants of the Wind 1 will have opportunities for further study leading to further qualifications such as: Level 9 Minor Award in Wind Energy (24 ECTS): This would additionally cover Wind 2, Grid Integration and Renewable Energy Introduction
Postgraduate Diploma or MSc in Renewable Energy Systems: (including modules in Solar, Ocean, Biomass and Economics and Policy)
