Wind energy industry urges support for new marine planning Bill

24 Jan 2020

The Irish Wind Energy Association has welcomed today’s publication of the General Scheme of the Marine Planning and Development Management Bill and urged all political parties to work together to ensure its swift passage through the next Oireachtas.

Dr David Connolly, CEO of the Irish Wind Energy Association, said: “Ireland has enormous offshore wind energy resources and they are critical to ensuring we decarbonise our electricity system.

“This Bill is essential to putting in place a robust planning system so that we can develop a new generation of offshore wind farms and hit our 2030 renewable electricity targets. We look forward to examining the General Scheme in detail in the coming weeks.

“I would urge all political parties who are serious about tackling climate change and developing offshore wind energy to commit to ensuring this legislation goes through the next Oireachtas as fast as possible.”
